For those with high-clearance or four-wheel drive vehicles, there are Forest Service designated car camping spots at various places along the jeep road to Crystal City. Most of these are between the jeep road and the river in environmentally sensitive habitat, and therefore are closed off from time to time for natural reclamation to occur. There are more car camping locations beyond the old mining town of Crystal City to the right past the beaver ponds, along the river, where the jeep trail turns left and ascends toward Schofield Pass and the Lead King Basin turn-off.
